The University of Florida Neuromuscular Division is a group of faculty and staff in the Department of Neurology at UF. Our goal is to improve the condition of patients suffering from neuromuscular disorders. We have many research projects focused on understanding the mysteries behind neuromuscular medicine.

What are Neuromuscular Disorders?

Neuromuscular disorders are conditions that affect the nerves and muscles. Nerves and muscles work together to allow us to move, speak and breathe. Neuromuscular disorders are caused by many factors, including genetics, infections and autoimmune diseases.

Some common neuromuscular disorders include:

• ALS: a degenerative disorder that makes nerve cells die and weakens muscles. It is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
• Ataxia: refers to uncoordinated movements, such as walking. There are different ataxia diagnoses, including Friedreich’s ataxia and Ataxia-telangiectasia.
• Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: a group of disorders passed down through families. These disorders affect the nerves outside the brain and spine. These are called the peripheral nerves.
• Guillain-Barre syndrome: an autoimmune disorder that causes nerve inflammation and muscle weakness.
• Muscular dystrophy: a group of inherited disorders that weaken the muscles over time.
• Multiple Sclerosis: an autoimmune disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. This is also known as the central nervous system.
• Myasthenia gravis: an autoimmune disorder that causes muscle weakness.
• Myositis: an inflammation or swelling of the muscles.
• Peripheral neuropathy: nerves normally carry information to and from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Peripheral neuropathy is when this system is not working well.
• Spinal muscular atrophy: a group of disorders of the motor neurons (motor cells). These disorders are normally inherited.

Symptoms of neuromuscular disorders can vary. They may include:

• Muscle weakness
• Muscle atrophy (shrinking)
• Difficulty speaking or swallowing
• Difficulty breathing

How are neuromuscular disorders diagnosed?

Diagnosing neuromuscular disorders can be challenging. This is because the symptoms can be different from person to person. They can also mimic those of other conditions. To diagnose a neuromuscular disorder, our providers will do a few things. This includes performing a physical exam and reviewing the patient's medical history. They also may order various tests, such as:

• Electromyography (EMG) to measure muscle and nerve function
• Nerve conduction studies to measure the speed of nerve signals
• Blood tests to check for infections or other underlying conditions
• Genetic testing to identify inherited disorders & then genetic counseling

How are neuromuscular disorders treated?

Treatment for a neuromuscular disorder depends on the specific condition. It also depends on the severity of the symptoms. Treatment options may include:

• Medications: There are several medications available to help manage neuromuscular disorders. These include steroids to reduce inflammation or immune suppressants to manage autoimmune disorders. In some cases, Botox injections may help treat neuromuscular disorders.
• Physical therapy: Physical therapy helps improve mobility. It also helps improve strength and function in people with neuromuscular disorders. We also offer electronic gait and balance testing.
• Occupational therapy: Occupational therapy helps people with neuromuscular disorders learn new ways to perform daily activities and improve independence.
• Assistive devices: Assistive Devices help people with neuromuscular disorders manage their condition. These are devices like wheelchairs and breathing machines. They also help improve a patient's quality of life.
• Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be the solution to repair damaged nerves or muscles.
