Buttock Augmentation
Definition
Buttock augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that is done to improve the volume, shape and contour of the buttock. This can be achieved by fat grafting, silicone implants or by a combination of these two techniques.
Alternative name
Gluteal augmentation
Description
There are three main kinds of butt augmentation cosmetic surgeries: buttock implant procedure, fat grafting (commonly known as a Brazilian butt lift) and overall buttock lift. Consult with your surgeon to determine which procedure is the best for you. All three procedures follow similar steps:
Buttock implant procedure, usually with a silicone implant:
- Anesthesia
- Incision
- Implant placement
- Closing incision
- Recovery
Fat grafting, also known as Brazilian butt lift (BBL) procedure:
- Anesthesia
- Liposuction
- Fat injection
- Recovery
Buttock lift:
- Anesthesia
- Incision
- Closing incision
- Recovery
Buttock enhancement procedures are often associated with these other body contouring procedures or body augmentation surgeries: dermal fillers, breast reconstruction, breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, fat transfer, laser hair removal and a tummy tuck.
Why is this procedure(s) performed?
Usually, buttock augmentation is done to enhance the patient's figure to their liking. The procedure can maybe allow their clothes to fit better or take away any unwanted excess fat around their body.
Risks
Risks from having a cosmetic surgery in general:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Poor-healing incisions
- Hematoma
- Seroma
- Unfavorable scarring
Before the procedure
Before getting a buttock augmentation, it is important to consult with your plastic surgeon so you can discuss the type of procedure, as well as the shape and size that best suits you.
After the procedure
After getting a buttock augmentation, bandages will be applied to the incisions. Small, thin tubes may temporarily be placed under the skin to drain any excess blood and/or fluids. It is important to avoid sitting down for a couple of weeks.
Outlook (prognosis)
No matter what type of buttock augmentation procedure the patient receives, there is a minimum recovery time of six weeks. Plan to take at least two weeks off work and rest at home as much as possible.
Avoid sitting for at least two to three weeks to allow the augmentation to heal properly. This is because sitting down for long periods of time can add unwanted pressure, compromising the final results.
