Shoulder and Elbow Surgery
-
Expert care for upper extremity conditions.
From fingertips to shoulders, we understand the importance of diagnosing and treating shoulder and elbow injuries. These injuries can significantly impact a patient's quality of life, limiting daily activities and causing persistent pain.

Pain in the upper extremity can result from:
Arthritic issues
Overuse injuries
Sports injuries
Nerve injuries
Congenital conditions
Any upper extremity pain, regardless of condition or cause, can impede a person鈥檚 day-to-day activities. While therapy with a physical therapist or occupational therapist can ease pain, surgery may be needed to treat the root cause and prevent further damage to your shoulder or elbow.

Post-surgical recovery: what to expect
How long does it take to recover from elbow or shoulder surgery?
Recovery time depends on the complexity of the surgery:
Minor procedures: A few days
Major surgeries (replacement or reconstruction): Several months

FAQs and common patient questions
Are shoulder dislocation and shoulder separation the same?
Unlike a shoulder dislocation, a shoulder separation doesn鈥檛 involve the shoulder joint. Instead, it refers to the acromioclavicular joint, or AC joint, located in the shoulder area where the collarbone, or clavicle, meets the highest point of the shoulder blade or scapula.
Separations usually stem from a fall squarely onto the shoulder that can tear ligaments and cause a bump. The severity of the tear and size of the bump can vary from case to case, but even those with a larger bump often make a 100 percent recovery.
What is tennis elbow and golfer鈥檚 elbow and how do you get it?
Tennis and golfer鈥檚 elbow are both common conditions for which upper extremity care and surgery can help alleviate pain. Tennis elbow is characterized by pain or soreness on the outside (lateral) part of the lower arm near the elbow, while golfer鈥檚 elbow is felt on the inside (medial) part. Both conditions are caused by repetitive use of a particular tendon that attaches a muscle to a bone in the elbow, eventually leading to tears in the tendon.
The specific motion that leads to tennis elbow is a constant wrist twist that is continuously practiced in tennis or other racquet sports. Golfer鈥檚 elbow is usually tied to golf, baseball or other throwing/swinging sports.
Despite their names, tennis elbow and golfer鈥檚 elbow can affect anyone continuously repeats a specific motion in this joint area. Certain occupations where a twisting motion in the wrist or elbow is repeatedly used can experience either of these upper extremity conditions, along with certain hobbies or lifestyle choices.
What is arthroscopic surgery?
Arthroscopic surgery is a widely used procedure for various body parts, including the, elbow and shoulder. Arthroscopy gives doctors the ability to spot and repair issues without the need for large incisions. This technique is most certainly applied to the elbow and shoulder.
A tiny camera, or arthroscope, is inserted through a small incision and is connected to a video monitor in the operating room. Making use of this visual, a doctor can examine all tissues (cartilage, bones, tendons and ligaments). If necessary, one to three more small incisions can then be made to insert other instruments and make repairs.
What is the difference between shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder arthroplasty?
Shoulder arthroscopy is surgery that uses a tiny camera called an arthroscope to examine or repair the tissues inside or around your shoulder joint. The arthroscope is inserted through a small cut (incision) in your skin.
Shoulder arthroplasty, however is a shoulder replacement surgery. With arthroplasty, an upper extremity surgeon will replace the bones of the shoulder joint with artificial joint parts.
What is a torn labrum?
Shoulder joints can experience tears in the glenoid, which is a shallow socket in the shoulder blade. A soft fibrous tissue rim called the labrum helps stabilize the joint.
A glenoid labrum tear can occur above (superior) or below (inferior) the middle of the glenoid socket. A SLAP tear occurs above the middle of the socket, while possibly affecting the biceps tendon. A Bankart tear occurs below the middle of the socket, while possibly affecting the inferior glenohumeral ligament.
