Periodontology
Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of the diseases of the structures that support teeth.
The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum and the periodontal ligament. Periodontists are dentists who specialize in periodontology.
Periodontal diseases take many forms. Left untreated, they lead to bone loss which is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults.
