Definition

Myositis interstitial lung disease (ILD) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation in the lungs and other parts of the body. One of the most common and serious complications inflammatory myopathies.

Longstanding inflammation in the lungs can lead to permanent scarring, a condition also known as pulmonary fibrosis (or ILD). Myositis ILD is one subtype of pulmonary fibrosis.

Alternative names

  • Antisynthetase syndrome
  • Autoimmune connective tissue disease ILD
  • Myositis associated ILD
  • Myositis associated interstitial lung disease
  • Overlap syndrome

Symptoms

In myositis ILD, inflammation affects the lungs and other parts of the body, causing symptoms. Persistent cough and shortness of breath are the most common inflammatory myositis symptoms.

Other symptoms include:

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of myositis ILD requires specialized testing and clinical evaluation by a multidisciplinary team of physicians.

Some of the commonly performed tests are:

Treatment

Treatments in myositis ILD focus on reducing inflammation and inflammation-related organ damage.

Inflammation can be suppressed by:

  • Immunosuppression (steroid alternatives)
  • Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG)
  • Steroids

Prompt diagnosis and treatment are important to limit irreversible and life-threatening complications. Myositis ILD is complex and requires a coordinated effort from a multidisciplinary team of trained physicians.

The choice of treatment depends on symptoms, disease severity and organ involvement. Lack of clinical response or medication side effects can also require a change in therapy.

Complications

Complications can occur because of the infectious disease itself or from medication side effects. Notify your care team immediately if new or worsening symptoms occur.

Living with Myositis ILD

  • Have consistent follow-up visits with your primary care doctor
  • Exercise daily and eat healthy
  • Get regular blood tests to monitor potential side effects
  • Stay current with vaccinations and cancer screenings
