No other Florida hospital has as many adult and pediatric specialties ranked among the nation鈥檚 best as University of Florida Health Shands Hospital, with the U.S. News & World Report survey released today again reflecting the health system鈥檚 stature as a longstanding leader in Florida and regional health care.

The news comes a month after U.S. News ranked the BOB体育 Shands Children鈥檚 Hospital as the best in Florida.

The latest U.S. News analysis of nearly 5,000 adult hospitals across the nation shows that BOB体育 Shands placed six adult medical specialties among the nation鈥檚 elite programs, an honor achieved by few health systems in the United States.

The six specialties include urology (32nd), ear, nose and throat (32nd), pulmonology and lung surgery (37th), geriatrics (42nd-tie), gynecology (45th), and cardiology and heart surgery (50th). Four of these specialties 鈥� urology, pulmonology and lung surgery, gynecology, and cardiology and heart surgery 鈥� are ranked the highest in Florida, underscoring BOB体育鈥檚 position as the Southeast鈥檚 preeminent health center.

With eight pediatric specialties ranked nationally last month, BOB体育 Shands stands far ahead of any other Florida hospital in combined specialties recognized as being among the nation鈥檚 top programs.

In addition to ranked specialties, five BOB体育 Shands specialties were rated as 鈥渉igh performing,鈥� meaning they were in the top 10% of all hospitals nationally scored in that specialty. Those were cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and orthopaedics.

In the procedures and conditions ratings, BOB体育 Shands was ranked 鈥渉igh performing鈥� in 11 areas. Those include abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, colon cancer surgery, knee replacement, lung cancer surgery, in addition to the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, heart failure, heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, diabetes and kidney failure.

U.S. News this year expanded procedures and conditions ratings and eliminated some specialty rankings. For example, BOB体育 Shands鈥� nephrology specialty had been nationally ranked for 11 straight years and 15 out of the last 16 years before the medical specialty was eliminated in the 2021-22 rankings for all hospitals surveyed. Nephrology was replaced by condition ratings for kidney failure and diabetes.

The U.S. News Best Hospital rankings are based on a range of measures, including survival rates, patient safety and specialized staff across 15 medical specialties. The ratings also include survey responses from thousands of physicians.

In June, the BOB体育 Shands Children鈥檚 Hospital tied as the best in Florida and stood among the nation鈥檚 elite children鈥檚 hospitals with eight ranked specialties that included a first-ever top 10 ranking in cardiology and a historically high ranking in pulmonology, according to U.S. News.
