'Lighting of the UF Century Tower'
Special Guest Appearance by the one-and-only Albert E. Gator
The International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization introduced World Diabetes Day in 1991 in response to the concern over the increasing cases of diabetes around the world. In 2011, diabetes caused approximately 4.6 million global deaths alone. In addition, 183 million people (50%) with diabetes worldwide are currently undiagnosed. World Diabetes Day on November 14th is is about mobilizing the global diabetes community to produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness.
Five years ago, UF became the first university in the nation to hold a lighting ceremony in recognition of World Diabetes Day and Diabetes Awareness Month. This year, several UF buildings, including Century Tower and the Southwest Recreation Center, will continue the tradition of going blue in helping celebrate the diversity of diabetes, a disease that afflicts nearly 26 million individuals across the United States and millions more worldwide.
The first 50 people in attendance will receive a World Diabetes Day T-shirt.
How you can get involved:
Take the Big Blue Test
The Big Blue Test is a program of the that encourages people with diabetes to test their blood sugar, exercise for 14-20 minutes, test again and share their experience on . Doing the Big Blue Test not only helps introduce more physical activity into your daily routine, but also helps organizations continue to offer diabetes services through Big Blue Test grants. You can test more than once (every day or two times a day even). There is also an that will make logging results and sharing them even easier. Together we can hit the goal of 20,000 tests! Submit a blue circle to our photo contest
The blue wheels are what remind me of the people that I am racing forthe diabetics Ryan Reed
World Diabetes Day is symbolized by a Blue Circle. Most significantly for the WDD campaign, the circle symbolizes unity. Our combined strength is the key element that made this campaign so special. The blue border of the circle reflects the colour of the sky and the flag of the United Nations. So, take a picture that has one or more blue circles. Single person or group shots are welcome. The contest entry deadline is November 12. Winners to be announced during the lighting of Century Tower. Prizes to be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place.
