PEDRO J. GREER, JR., MD Professor of Medicine; Chair of Department of Medicine, Family Medicine and Community Health; Associate Dean for Community Engagement; Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Greer has been an advocate for health equity by engaging communities to create effective health and social policies and accessible health care systems. Dr. Greer was recently honored with the 2014 National Jefferson Award (often referred to as the Nobel Prize for public service) in the category of Greatest Public Service Benefiting the Disadvantaged. Dr. Greer has also been recognized with the Great Floridian Award in 2013, a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, a Presidential Service Award in 1997, and a MacArthur Fellowship (Genius Grant) in 1993. Dr. Greer has published more than 25 articles and book chapters on topics ranging from hepatic and digestive disorders to policy, poverty, and health in America. He authored Waking Up in America, a book about his experiences, from providing care to homeless persons under bridges in Miami, Florida, to advising U.S. presidents on healthcare.
