Description
Application exercises are a major component of student learning in a team-based learning (TBL) module. Team applications allow learners to apply the knowledge gained from pre-class assignments to solve real-world problems in a collaborative classroom atmosphere. This workshop will introduce participants to the rules for creating and implementing effective TBL application exercises, known as the 4 Ss: Significant problem, Same problem, Specific choice, and Simultaneous report. This workshop is designed to prepare participants to design their own application exercises, which will be reviewed and revised in the companion workshop Advanced Team Application Writing."
Objectives:
- Discuss the benefits of 4-S application exercises with TBL practitioners using practical examples. Discuss the importance of linking application exercises to higher order learning objectives. Given a TBL problem-solving activity, recognize components of the activity that deviate from the 4-S guidelines. Be prepared to design your own 4-S application exercises.
Preparation Assignment:
- Please read the PDF TBL Backward Design before the workshop, which is available online at
